Is curry a spice?
Curry or curries is a generic term, primarily employed in Western culture to denote a wide variety of dishes originating in Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Thai or other Southeast Asian cuisines. “Curry powder” is not a single spice, but mixture of different spices makes curry. It can be wet or dry and can be cooked either with vegetable, meat, poultry or fish.

One of their special dishes is delicious Rogan Josh. It is an aromatic lamb dish hailing from Kashmir. Rogan means oil in Persian, while Josh means “heat, hot or passionate”. Rogan Josh thus means cooked in oil at intense heat. It is a meat dish which is red in color due to the use of “Kashmiri Mirchi” (red chilies). This dish is cooked in caramelized onions and tomatoes with medium to spicy wet gravy flavored with aniseed, separately served with basmati rice or naan.

Namaste!

Wine is all about the journey. Any wine lover would have to agree. The discovery of new wines, new regions and new vintages is what keeps wine exciting to novices and enthusiasts alike. For Drew Barrymore, it was the journey that propelled her to delve into the world of wine and with an eponymously named Pinot Grigio. A fan of crisp, fruity white wines, Barrymore has created a wine that reflects her style and personality: fresh, dynamic and fun.

The Label Barrymore Wines
Inspired by her travels in Italy, Barrymore chose Pinot Grigio. In honor of her family, Barrymore chose to showcase her family crest on the label, which was designed by Shepard Fairey, the iconic American graphic designer and his Studio Number One team.

The Region
Barrymore Pinot Grigio, an IGT Delle Venezie, is made from grapes grown in the Triveneto area, which includes three of Italy’s most northern regions: Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto. The Triveneto regions lie just below the Alps and are renowned for producing crisp and fruity white wines.

The Grape
Made with Pinot Grigio, a grape also known as Pinot Gris in different wine-growing regions around the world, it is derived from Pinot Noir, which influences the lively grapes’ silvery hue.
Pinot Grigio is beloved around the world as a wine ready to pair nicely with a multitude of food. A terrific match for all kinds of Italian dishes, from gnocchi in brown butter with fried sage to a Caprese salad, Pinot Grigio is a great wine for the dinner table, as well as for enjoying pre-dinner with friends and family.

Awards
Barrymore Pinot Grigio wins GOLD at Le Challenge International du Vin, Wilson Daniels, April 6, 2012

Q & A with Drew Barrymore: L.A. Cravings, Dying Art Forms & Barrymore Wines (via Descubre Baja California)

Drew Barrymore perks up when we start talking about Baja’s wine country – a topic that seems to be on everyone’s lips since Anthony Bourdain declared it the new Tuscany. “That sounds so cool!” she says excitedly on the other end of the phone. “All I do is sit around and research what food adventures I can go on, and that one sounds like a really good one.”

Barrymore has always been a culinary thrill-seeker, downing piles of sushi with her famous godfather when she was 7. Get her talking about octopus, tacos or a patty melt and she practically coos. It’s that love of food and the communal experience of eating and drinking that’s informed her latest venture: the launch of Barrymore Wines. It’s a humble foray into the world of winemaking, currently producing just Pinot Grigio with a label that bares her family crest, done up by friend and famed street artist Shepard Fairey.

A self-proclaimed winemaking neophyte, Barrymore is taking it slow. Ultimately, she’d love to produce more varietals, and perhaps even open a wine bar somewhere in the city. For now though, there’s just the one bottle, and for her, that’s all anyone needs to set the right mood.

The most reputable insurance broker in Los Cabos

A good move is to invest in Cabo, but a smart move is to protect that investment.

For over 10 years, International Insurance Services has been helping Mexicans and Foreigners with all aspects of insurance services: life, health care, scholarship & retirement, auto (for national and foreigner cars), construction & liability, watercrafts and many more. Their services are 100% bilingual (which means you will get your papers in English too!) and represent all major companies in Mexico, including: QBE, GNP, Qualitas, Zurich, SkyMed, Mapfre, Bupa, AIG and GMX.

Since their establishment, residents and visitors of Los Cabos have been able to rely on the professionals at International Insurance Services whenever they need any medical, personal or commercial insurance coverage. Their expertise, knowledge and relationship with major international insurances brands have helped people enjoy the area with the peacefulness that all they could possibly need is just a phone call away.

The best way to acknowledge their impeccable service is with testimonials by some of their clientele:

“Arandi,
I would like to compliment you on the service I have received. Not just recently but over the many years I have been doing business with you.
I’m the kind of person who buys insurance hoping to never use it. For most of the time that has held true.
As you know a short time ago I was involved in a potentially very dangerous accident out in the middle of nowhere many miles from any town. I was sideswiped by a 45 foot semi truck trying to pass me at a high rate of speed. All it took was one phone call to your agency and an adjuster arrived within 40 minutes. He was very professional and efficient; unlike the adjuster for the trucker who took 3 hours to arrive.
The body shop you sent me to was once again “top of the line” and did a flawless job of repairing the damage to my vehicle. Damaged wheels and tires replaced and my car is as good as new.
This just goes to prove what I have believed for many years. When you buy insurance always deal with a reputable agent in the area in which you are going to use the insurance. I can only imagine what the situation would have been if I had to try to get ahold of an agent in the U.S. from that road side.
I also want to commend your office staff. Whenever I have a question no matter how small I always receive an immediate response with the answer. No automated emails about “we will respond within 48 hours”.
All in all very professional personal service from you and everyone on your staff.
Thank you,
 Ron Nelson”

As a golf professional who played golf throughout college, played professionally for several years and went on to make a career out of golf, it was nearly unthinkable to take a vacation that included the four letter word which had consumed our lives. So when my gorgeous wife Amy, came to me with the idea of a golf getaway for just the two of us, it was almost too good to be true. Our lives have changed dramatically over the past several years. I have moved into Resort management, Amy has a thriving photography business and we have three beautiful little girls at home. We rarely have time to think, let alone spend some time together. The thought of planning a vacation is daunting and the reality is that we cannot set up the logistics for more than a few days. Having moved to the Baja over a year ago, we have not had the chance to travel around and see the beauty of this magical land. So we took the plunge and headed out on a three day journey around the southern tip of the Baja that we have since dubbed “The Baja Golf Trail” and we returned with memories of a lifetime.

The goal of our trip was simple, spend some time together as a couple, experience the beauty of the Baja as it was meant to be seen, eat some amazing food and, yes, play some golf along the way. Setting out from Cabo San Lucas mid morning on Thursday we began our adventure up Mexico 1 toward the Bay of Dreams or Bahia de Los Sueños.

Perhaps nowhere in the world will you find a better collection of golf courses in such a perfect setting. With almost all of the courses playing along or with views of the Sea of Cortez, Cabo is guaranteed to satisfy all of your golf desires. Each course offers a desert golf feel mixed with the seaside look found only in a few locations worldwide. While it is possible to spend a week playing just the courses around Cabo, this trip was about exploration in addition to golf and thus we continued on with our appetite whet for what lay ahead.

The drive north was great. Rigid mountains and desert landscape are broken up regularly by the most spectacular aqua clear water of the coastal villages. You can truly get a sense and feel for the Baja prior to any civilization. The towns are unique, the landscape amazing and, as our good friend told us, “stay on the pavement and you won’t get lost.” He was correct. When the road turned to dirt we had arrived!

The Bay of Dreams is straight out of an island fantasy. Having grown up in the cold, snowy, harsh winters of Vermont, you would often think about being on an island with the crystal clear water rolling to the shore, couple of chairs, an umbrella and a bucket of beer. When we pulled through the gates of the Gran Sueño Resort we had it all except the bucket of beer was substituted for a couple of ice cold margaritas… oh well. The Gran Sueño is a private oasis created by the legendary real estate icon Steve Games. As if it is his own private playground, the resort has several different unique homes that can be shared by a couple, family or a group of friends. Mark Azoff and his staff treat you like family and we felt like we had left the world behind and escaped into our own universe.

We dove into the water, swam out to a floating raft and took it all in. The relaxation ran through our bodies and Amy said, “This must be a top five Bennett moment…” Life was good. With an afternoon tee time set we headed back to our villa and geared up for some golf. Having seen the golf course as we drove in, I knew we were in for a treat.

Loading up our bags from the Beach Club we were escorted out along the coast line to the first tee where I quickly realized that we were one of just two groups playing that day. I couldn’t stop smiling and Amy couldn’t resist snapping pictures. It was breathtaking. In the spirit of the moment I made the decision that I was going to tee it up barefoot as if I had just come from the beach and was heading to play. I put the peg in the ground and ripped one down the fairway, it was awesome. Following an even par start through six holes, Amy said I should put my shoes on so people were not confused in the pictures… I am still not sure golf shoes are really needed but my golf game was not as good once my shoes were laced.

The course is masterfully designed and blends into the dunes perfectly. The grass is cut to fairway length throughout and the tee boxes roll from one to the next with subtle mounding. I am not sure if I enjoyed the course more as a golfer or if Amy enjoyed the course more as a photographer but we would both rank this as one of the best golf experiences of our lives. We were free to play the course at the pace we pleased (ended up taking 2.5 hours) and the way we wanted. I found the course challenging and rewarding with a mixture of different shot requirements. The beauty is unparalleled and the company was superb.

While I must admit it was difficult to pack up the next day and leave the Gran Sueño (recommend staying a few days), we packed up and headed North to La Paz. Within an hour we had arrived to the outskirts of the city. We hit the water and headed right along the bay passing Pedregal de La Paz to Costa Baja.

Costa Baja is in contrast to Bahia de los Sueños, but spectacular in its own way. While Bahia de los Suenos is more of a throwback, Costa Baja is a modern day golf course with breathtaking elevation changes and vistas. Climbing up into the mountains, there are many shots where you tee off with the Sea of Cortez as the background. Your ball seems to float into the blue abyss, depending on how well it is hit until reaching the perfectly manicured grasses below. Gary Player did a fabulous job of accommodating all skills by placing a variety of tee boxes on each hole. And his routing truly took advantage of the best pieces of land.

Now, what I have not told you to this point is that Amy, when motivated, is one of the most talented golfers that I have seen. Although I may be a bit biased, she has a beautiful swing and as a former US Ski Team member, her athleticism is unmatched. So when she told me that she was ready to play and wanted a “match”, I knew we were in for a great day. The game was simple, Amy gets a shot a hole and when she hits the green she has a choice, take an automatic two putt or play it out to completion. The whole idea was to make the game fun and for us to have a little friendly competition. So when she drove the 270 yard Par 4 sixth hole and had to choose between an automatic birdie three of a chance to make an eagle two, Amy went for the eagle and walked away with the win.

Ultimately, the course played perfectly for us both. From the back tees it is a challenge and demanding course but from the forward tees Amy stated “Gary Player must really love women” because she had shots that she could handle and it kept her in the game. By the 17th hole Amy was one up on me with two to play and when she knocked a gorgeous looking 6 iron to 15 feet, she picked up, took her par and the victory! La Paz truly has a world class golf course to be proud of.
As we sat at a dinner that evening, we realized that this little journey through the Baja was incredible on so many levels. We were truly reconnecting as a couple, we were experiencing an amazing land and culture together and we were enjoying a great game in our own way on our own level. This is what a golf getaway should be.

The following morning we set off for Cabo but not before a perfectly timed lunch in Todos Santos where we fueled up for the last round of the “Baja Trail” at Diamante Golf Course. Situated on the Pacific side just to the North of Cabo, Diamante would bring our experience full circle, literally. Designed by the newly appointed US Ryder Cup Captain, Davis Love III and his team, Diamante is a wonderful links style layout that blends in perfectly to the Pacific Dunes that surround the land. So, we landed on the driving range and were meet by the smell of smoldering slider burgers and sound of rock music cranking from the speakers setting the tone for the day.

The course is beautifully laid out to accommodate the prevailing Pacific breeze. Golfers are forced to play a variety of shots and control the trajectory of the ball. The front nine plays through the dunes and you are teased with views of the Pacific that highlight the 15th, 16th and 17th holes. Most importantly to us, Diamante blends a perfect mixture of golf with world class service and hospitality. “Comfort Stations” on every 6 holes offer anything from Tortilla soup to pineapple tamales, fruits, candies, and drinks galore… It is certainly not hard to forget the last bad shot when you are met with a smiling face and an ice cold Corona… yes please! We truly felt “comfortable” at the “Comfort Stations”.

By the time we had reached the 17th tee, golf had become secondary. The golf course, the beauty of the land, the service and the comfort where capped off by a perfectly poured Diamante water (turns out to be a mixture of rum, vodka, pineapple and Fresca) on the Pacific Beach. Diamante is more than just golf, it is a true experience.

With just a 15 minute drive home, Amy and I reminisced about our couple of days together, which felt like a week’s vacation. We had done it all and satisfied all of our desires. I can confidently say that the Baja offers the most unique landscape, some of the best golf courses in the world and when combined with the people that you love, it can create some of the most memorable experiences.

We have already begun to plan our next “vacaciónes” and there is no doubt that it will include the same elements as this trip. So why not give the Baja Golf Trail a try? I can promise that you will love every minute. And oh by the way… you never have to ask about rain checks.
