We received a very friendly letter by “Mama Diane”, a social worker who has been living and helping most vulnerable children of Baja for the past six years. She has been visiting Baja since 14 years ago and has more than 30 years of experience of working with “at risk” children. Diane sent us an article about Casa Hogar or care homes in Baja. We appreciate her contribution very much and would like to help the needed children of Baja Sur. Get to know about the situation of Casa Hogar institutions in Baja, and lend a hand, if you can. The children will appreciate it a lot! And we will too.

What is a Casa Hogar?

For many years the voice of the children was almost silent. Today things are changing. When I visited Baja Sur fourteen years ago there was only one orphanage or casa hogar (a care home) in the entire state to care for children who cannot live with their parents. A Catholic home for children in La Paz has been caring for children for almost 60 years, Ciudad de los Niños. This home primarily serves children from poor families and occasionally children coming through the doors of DIF.

DIF, which is short for the National Agency for Family Development, provides social and medical services to the poor, disabled, those neglected and abused, both children and adults throughout Mexico. Sonya Agundez, the wife of the former Baja Sur Governor Narcisco Agundez Montaño, was until recently the president of the state DIF. Sonya has personally helped many children in her own home and even adopted a young boy. When meeting with Sonya about four years ago, we discussed the need for more casa hogars.

Most of the children living in these residential homes are not actual orphans but are in need of care because their parents have drug addictions, are imprisoned, or have severe health or mental health issues hindering their ability to parent children. The majority of children living in casa hogars have experienced some form of abuse; some have been prostituted. Many of these children need short-term care but more frequently they are in need of long-term care or adoption.

Seeing the need, my team and I prepared to open a home near Santa Rosalia while two larger casa hogars were under construction in the southern end of BCS, one in La Paz and the other in Cabo San Lucas. Sonya and her team worked diligently to open a DIF casa cuna / casa hogar in August of 2007 for 100 children. Our doors opened for 20 children in San Lucas, just south of Santa Rosalia in September of 2007. And a casa hogar for 60 boys was opened in Cabo San Lucas in February of 2008 with the help of the Rotary Club. Suddenly there were three new facilities in BCS to care for Baja’s most vulnerable children!

After being operational for three years, we sadly closed our doors in August of 2010. Donations fell sharply from the financial crisis in the U.S. and fund raising was difficult for our home as it was located in a little fishing village. Also worth mentioning, Loreto has a casa hogar to help children but only on a short-term basis. Clearly a new home is needed for the long term care of children in the north end of BCS.

We cannot allow more homes to close. Your help is needed. Unlike the U.S., Mexico has very little money in its budget for social services. The Catholic home in La Paz, Ciudad de los Niños, receives funding from the Catholic Church and runs an onsite print shop. The DIF casa hogar in La Paz receives its funding from the state government. However the other homes for children rely solely on donations from the local community and from visitors such as those from the U.S. and Canada.

The DIF casa hogar in La Paz currently serves 80 infants to teen girls. Ciudad de los Niños also has 80 children and teens, both boys and girls. The casa hogar in Cabo San Lucas cares for about 30 boys ages 7 – 16 years. In addition to these facilities, Alberto and Alma Asuna have been helping children and teens with drug addictions for close to a decade. Their home just south of La Paz also serves children whose parents are drug involved. The Asuna’s Albergue Infantil Nueva Creacion is serving 20 children ranging from 2 – 17 years. The most recent casa hogar opened this summer in Todos Santos run by Joel and Alicia Hernandez. The Hogar del Niño is located on a mini ranch by the new Pemex. Currently 22 children ranging from 6 – 13 years are living with the Hernandez’ family and a staff of volunteers.

I discovered during a recent visit to all of these homes that Southern Baja’s “at risk” children are receiving loving care from committed volunteers. Some staff receive a salary but largely volunteers are utilized. The casa hogar appearing to need the most attention is the one in Todos Santos – Hogar del Niño. It is new and has not yet developed a regular support base. This home for children is in need of food, bunk beds, and shoes. Hogar del Niño also needs the materials and skilled volunteers to build additional dormitories and a new kitchen and dining hall. The Osuna’s Albergue Infantil Nueva Creacion currently needs the finances and skilled help to build a new kitchen and dining hall, and they could use a new van. The casa hogar in Cabo San Lucas needs a stronger financial base as well. Currently the boys need underclothes – boxers, socks and t-shirts. In addition, this home is looking for volunteers to spend time with the children. Javier Aguirre, a psychologist, is the director and as well has good English. The DIF casa hogar in La Paz would appreciate volunteers to help them provide activities for the children in the community. They currently have a need for shoes, underclothes, uniform blouses, school supplies, and a glucose testing kit for their diabetic children. The Ciudad de Los Niños, not unlike the other homes for children need ongoing financial support and volunteers. It takes special people who make great personal sacrifices to give the love and care needed to these broken children. Today hundreds of wounded children are receiving loving care in these homes. The caregivers are heroes and need to be celebrated as they are healing children who learn to love and to trust again. “Take A Walk In My Shoes”, A magnificent art exhibition brought to Cabo From New York.

Within the 5th anniversary celebration, Los Cabos Children Foundation is delighted to inform you about the event “Take A Walk In My Shoes”, a magnificent art exhibition with artist visiting from New York, which will be held on February 2nd – 3rd, 2012 at Plaza El Faro located in Palmilla. The exhibition is a fundraising event on behalf one of our most important programs: APLS “Academic of Pedriatric Life Support” which are seminars to our medical specialists.

In Los Cabos Children Foundation we recognize the importance of this vital training, as the majority of Baja’s medical specialist wouldn’t have access to those seminars due to our geographic location that isolate us from mainland. This is the reason why LCCF brings the seminars to them! Since this program creation, seminars has become a key element on the support and attention chain provided to the children and communities as well and that on 2010 we had more than 150 doctors, nurses and emergencies specialists.

Besides this APLS training, LCCF brings specialist from the “Texas Children’s Hospital” from the famous “Kangaroo Crew” for important seminars like the S.T.A.B.L.E. no only for pediatrics but also rescue, paramedics, assistants and nurses. S.T.A.B.L.E. is the bigger educational Neo-natal program apply and distributed to focus exclusively on  post-resuscitation, pre-transportation and care to stabilize a new born baby. Luckily this has been already taught in Baja Sur.

I remember the first time I heard about the Teleton program and the CRIT center (Child Rehabilitation Center Teleton, for its initials in Spanish). I also remember watching the program with my family that day, being touched by the stories … and happily smiled to the goal reached! Much has passed since that day over eleven years ago.

Year after year I saw the event on TV and contributed with whatever means I had at hand. Expectations grew and so did the generosity of all who participated, not only within Mexic,o but help came from other countries as well! Over the years, the money raised allowed for more CRIT centers to be built all over the country resulting in many children being helped throughout therapy and rehabilitation. Results were building up and what I will always remember is the final result of several thousands of children with a better quality of life and with the ability to care for themselves. And I knew that whatever I had given, whatever we had contributed, was worth it.

Imagine how surprised I was when I found out that the first CRIT center in all the Baja California Peninsula was to be built in La Paz city!

In a colorful and touching ceremony on November 23^rd, First Lady Margarita Zavala, Baja California Sur Governor Narciso Agúndez and Teleton Foundation President Fernando Landeros, cut the ribbon of a beautiful center built with the hopes and dreams of all Mexico. Designed with a starfish shape and bathed by the Sea of Cortes waters, it sits on a 5.2 hectares terrain with over 4,700 sq mts of closed rehabilitation rooms and therapy facilities. It is planning to attend 500 patients from ages 1 month old to 18 years old with neuromusculoskeletal disabilities, offering comprehensive rehabilitation to promote their full development and integration into society. Patients will receive the unique care, quality of treatments and human warmth characteristics of the medical model by the CRIT system.

The La Paz CRIT Center will begin operations on February 17^th, 2011 and will attend children with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, childbirth problems, muscular dystrophy and amputation problems. Some of the specialties of the CRIT center will be pediatrics, orthopedics, neurology and human communication, among others. Doctors will try to standardize the clinical criteria in which each patient will be attended and with the help of different types of therapies, programs and stimulations, they will reach better results in a shorter period of time.

Construction of this center lights the hope of many parents with disabled children and represents an opportunity for them to live a normal life. The dream is far from being over, it has just begun, and I am sure we will hear many stories of love, friendship, courage and leadership taking place in this center, and we will be able to witness the growth of a more tolerant and compassionate society.

As we are part of this dream, it is important to continue its support by donating our time, money or means to keep it growing and helping. Did you know that another way of helping is by donating hair? Pelonton is a program within the system that collects braided hair to make oncological wigs for cancer patients. If you would like to help, you can donate your braided clean and dry hair to this noble cause. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. Remember, the best of you makes Mexico a better country.

Hogar Del Niño is a Christian based orphanage located in Todos Santos on a large parcel of land with a girls dormitory and a boys dormitory, office, dispensary, and his and her bathrooms.

Joel Hernandez is the director and currently has 25 children residing here.  The land is large with fertile fields for growing their own food; he currently has a bakery installed on the property in hopes to begin producing products to sell so they can be self-sustaining.  There are chickens, cows and goats that also reside on the property.  Joel would like to expand his project so more children can live here in peace and harmony.  Many children are brought here by DIF (Desarollo Integral de la Familia) because they have been abused, neglected, molested or have no family to support them.

If you would like to participate and help the kids in the orphanage, this is what they would appreciate most: Bunk beds, bedding for single bed, pillows, overhead ceiling fans with lights, food, help to till the soil or someone with a tractor.

A letter from Biby:

This time I would like you to meet “Familia Gonzales”, a family of 6 members formed  by: dad Jose, 45 years; Mom Olga, 43 years; sons Irving, 21 years, who works as a cook; Luis, 19 years, also a cook; Marco, 14 years, goes to school and after school you can see him at the grocery store helping you pack your purchase; and little Hector with 4 years of age, which suffers cerebral paralyze and goes to the school for children with special needs in Cabo San Lucas. Hector is the reason why I meet and connected with this wonderful family that needs our help!

Don Jose and Dona Olga moved to Cabo 6 years ago, from San Mateo Toluca in Mexico, pursuing the big dream of a developing Cabo. “I had a good job!” Don Jose says, “everything was going good!” Jose has suffered all his life, he comes from a family of alcoholism and luckily found his way out of that life,  he meet Olga, they fell in love, and currently they live in a very tiny little house here in Meza Cabo San Lucas.

This family has gone through a lot of difficult times, one is Hector’s health condition and also father Jose. Jose has prostate cancer and osteoporosis, his job was delivering water in his truck, but since the disease progressed he hasn’t been able to go back to work. The boys work and help the family sustain, mother Olga cooks and cleans for the family but she is devoted to little Hector, as it is very hard for him to move around, even though Mobilize Mankind has given him a motor wheelchair which improves his life significantly, but he can’t use it around the house because the floors made out of dirt.

So, you might ask your self, why I am telling you about this family? The reason why I decided that I was going to help this family is because they are a family build of love, compassion and help. A very good example for our community. Volunteering and working in the barrios with the people made me realize there is not a lot of families that are still together and have a mom and a dad, mostly there is always the mom alone with the kids, not bringing love and belonging sense to their kids because of their own lack of it. This family holds hands, looks in to their eyes and even cries together, they fight together as a family and they believe love and working as a team as a family team is the only way of growing. I visited their house and I was impressed how they take pride of their little house, they keep it clean and nice, everything in its place. This is a very good example for their neighbors.

I want to invite our community to help this family, not by giving them money, or clothes, this family needs jobs, scholarships for their kids, health care but the most important Jose the dad needs to have a job to sustain his family.

Eagles Wings Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established in 1999 by Universal Vacation Club of The Villa Group (Villa del Palmar, Villa la Estancia, Villa del Arco) to contribute to the community in need that work in the resorts, restaurants, stores, and other establishments. EWF assists the most important community programs such as Amigos de los Ninos, Mobilize Mankind, Red Autismo, Green Scholarships, Casa Hogar, Cabo Special Needs School and many others. This year we are adding contributions to Sarahuaro, The Humaine Society, Galento Scholarships, Casa Hogar Juan Diego.
